TRUTH: Young players that face the grave reality of being released can be hit with a range of emotion

Nowadays it is becoming harder and harder to make it. Climbing the ranks of football means hard work, pressure and a rollercoaster of emotion. So when a young player gets released from a football academy - it's never going to be easy.

Feelings of disappointment, failure, lack of confidence, or self-doubt are common. Life so far was all about football, and only football, so going back to normality can be confusing.

Age also matters. When youngsters get released at age 8 - no big deal. But at school-leaving age, it's a different story. At such a critical stage of their development, there are many emotional transitions. Imagine finding your identity, and then it's taken from you? No wonder doubts and worries cross their minds. They're devastated.

When I got released, I was devastated. I wasn't prepared for failure.

Help & support

We know it's not easy for a parent either.

You can get extra help and support from the club coaches, or the pro academy themselves. Mental wellbeing professionals can also provide advice.

Studying different avenues for your child is key. Looking for another club could be an option, or continuing further education. Many academies even provide released players with resources to help with the transition.
