Left-midfielders play normally in a flat four midfield. They must be confident on the ball and have a good passing range. Their main role is to offer support in wide areas and put the ball in the box. However, unlike wingers , they must be able to recycle possession and trackback. Coutinho and Giggs are perfect examples of left-midfielders with great feet and quality passing range.

Giggs was the ultimate left midfielder , possessing a dangerous cross and lightning-quick pace to attack teams on the counter and trackback to help his defence. This is why he was such an integral part of Manchester United's 442 formations.
